Before I toss this research completely can I ask you what are the product names of Nok's "smart phones". Sometimes forrester accurately reports stuff but it is such a tiny segment of the market it seems way off.

I'll defer to Eric to provide the authoritative answer to this, but here's my stab at it. Up until recently, Nokia separated their smartphone sales into a consumer oriented "Mutlimedia" division, and the business oriented "Enterprise" division. Multimedia (where N-series devices resided) have always generated high margins (higher than the blended device average). In contrast, I believe this past quarter is the first one in which the Enterprise division showed profitability (and how-- they had 18 % operating margins). If Forrester ony considered the Enterprise devices from prior quarters (like the E90, E61, etc), I can see how they might have come to the conclusion that Nokia's "smartphone" margins were not so great.

Nokia Smart Mobile and Portable Devices

Hi Lizzie ...

<< yeah I know!!!! I was already called on it but I was hoping to hide until you showed up. <ducking> >>

Believe me ... been there, done that! <ggg>

<< I have some numbers here on Nokia that came from Forrester so you'd think they'd be right......... but clearly not! These are just smart phones. Before I toss this research completely can I ask you what are the product names of Nok's "smart phones". >>

There aren't really any product names as such to use as an identifier. The premium Nokia converged device (smartphone) "product family" for consumers and the principle product of the Multimedia division is NSeries and you'll always see the 'N' prefix in the model number (N95, N81, N75, etc). The "product family" for the enterprise (products of Enterprise Solutions) is the ESeries and you'll always see the 'E' prefix in the model number (E65, E61, E90 Communicator). All current products use the Nokia Series 60 (S60) software development platform (but Nokia licenses that platform and its modifiable source code to other OEMs like Samsung, LG, and Lenovo). The HLOS with real-time multithreading kernel in all cases is Symbian v. 9.x which evolved from the 32-bit Psion EPOC handheld OS.

The earlier Communicators (two models still delivering) used a different software platform -- Nokia Series 80 -- on the Symbian v 8.x and earlier OS. The original GSM smartphone enjoying legitimate commercial success, was the Nokia 9000 Communicator introduced in 1996 which used an Intel 386 processor and 16-bit GEOS OS. The follow-on Nokia 9110 Communicator used an AMD 486 processor and the same GEOS OS. The 1st Symbian OS based S80 Communicator introduced in 2000 was the 9210 and it used a 32-bit 66 MHz ARM9-based RISC CPU produced by TI.

Where it gets confusing is that Nokia Mobile Phones (NMP) also produces Symbian S60 based products without the prefix identifiers shown above. NMP also produces mid-range feature phones using Nokia's proprietary OS (NOS) and the Series 40 (S40) software development platform

In addition to the S60 products Nokia also has an open-source Linux based platform for its touchscreen Internet Tablets (smart portable devices without cellular RF but with WiFi and VoIP support). To confuse things further they use the 'N' prefix (N770 and N800 so far) with an extra numeral in the model number. The new Touch will probably pave the way for a highly functional 3rd generation version.
