The excuse Apple gave here stateside was that they didn't use 3G because it wasn't widely deployed. The excuse they gave in the UK is that they didn't use 3G because it is a power hog. They couldn't use the "widely deployed" excuse over there because EDGE is the technology that isn't widely deployed.

He actually says that a 3G version wont be available until late in '08. slashgear.com He is absolutely right that 3G handset provide less battery life. However, the fact is that the iPhone currently offers 8 hours of talk time so a 5 hour target would represent a little over a 60% ratio. That is pretty much the ratio for the LG Viewty (5.75 hours GSM, 3.75 hours WCDMA). mobileburn.com I would also add that many 3G handsets allow you to change the settings and shut off the 3G radio if battery life is a concern (like Apple does now with WiFi and Bluetooth). JMO, but sales of the iPhone would have been significantly better if they had gone with the 3G option even if it cut battery life to 4 hours....and that is particularly true in the UK where the 30% EDGE coverage is just atrocious.
