you compare its abilities to what a ten-year-old laptop can do. Then you complain that it forces you to use a specific browser.

yes, it is kind of sad that a brand new device like this can't keep open multiple browser windows as advertised, whereas any cheap machine from a decade ago could.

this is a particular problem since Apple falsely advertises the amazing ability of the browser to have multiple windows like ten years ago...except that it can't really do it. i don't know if it's a firmware problem or a more intractable performance problem. in any case, they shouldn't advertise abilities that don't exist.

as for "complaining" about Safari, that wasn't meant seriously. if being forced to use Safari were the worst problem with the device, i wouldn't have returned it. i knew about the Safari part going in. i didn't know about the false advertising of multiple windows.

i also didn't know that the display is not really suitable for reading thousands of words at a sitting, which would have been my main intended use. i was looking for a small device that would allow me to leave my Macbook at home more. it sure looked good in the store, but i should have actually tried to read more than a paragraph or two on it before buying it.

now it is clear to me that this device is really meant for only casual web surfing--checking scores on ESPN, the latest OJ mug shot on smokinggun, that kind of thing. actually reading articles is painful.

also, inputting text is very hard. i can't imagine many serious road warriors will be happy switching from Blackberrys to this keyboard.

as i mentioned before, i sure hope Apple comes out with an ultraportable. i don't want one bad enough to get a Wintel machine, but i would certainly get a Mac.

And a laptop, especially one that is ten years old, can't fit neatly in your pocket.

why do you say "especially" one that is ten years old? i have a ten-yr-old laptop that is smaller than the smallest modern laptop Apple has for sale. one of the obvious problems with laptops today is that they are just as heavy and the batteries wear out just as quick as laptops of a decade ago.
