No, to be fair to the appeasers, it didn't become crystal clear until later. Hitler hid his plans, and always had a plausible story to tell about his reasonable demands for rebuilding Germany peacefully. You had to look under the covers, and notice what Hitler was saying and doing inside Germany, what he said in German.

Hitler never boasted of plans to destroy other countries in the 1930s, the way Ahmedinijad is doing today.
