I never said that he didn't talk about power consumption. What he talks about first is the wide deployment of EDGE. The article you linked is no exception.

If you think about wireless broadband networks, EDGE is the only ubiquitous nationwide broadband network deployed today.

In my memory that has been the focus of Apple's justification for using EDGE over 3G here in the US.

I could come up with the links to Jobs talking about power consumption

Perhaps this one from a WSJ interview: online.wsj.com

Here's the relevant section:

Mr. Jobs: When we looked at 3G, the chipsets are not quite mature, in the sense that they're not low-enough power for what we were looking for. They were not integrated enough, so they took up too much physical space. We cared a lot about battery life and we cared a lot about physical size. Down the road, I'm sure some of those tradeoffs will become more favorable towards 3G but as of now we think we made a pretty good doggone decision.

I had forgotten that Japan and Korea aren't GSM (any exception yet?), so what are Apple's options in those markets? Are there any 3G CDMA chipsets mature enough? What does this mean for UTMS versus CDMA2000 versus EVDO? The Asia rollout in first quarter '08 will force Apple to make some commitment. In the mean time, iTouch is there as "training wheels". Great marketing and they'll be all the more envious.
