DoCoMo was GSM in Japan, but I think they made their own standard. I'm not sure if their new 3G WCDMA network incorporates EDGE or not. Since Apple took the iPhone to Verizon first, I don't think there are any problems building a 3G CDMA2000 iPhone for KDDI on the CDMA2000 networks. Korea is also ready for 3G CDMA2000 phones anytime now, no reason to wait for 3G WCDMA.

Although Apple is positioning exclusivity of the phones, I think they need to be flexible with different technology pathways in different markets. Europe is a basion of GSM handset makers and Korea and Japan are the bastions of CDMA2000 handset makers. I think that Apple would be better off with those kind of handsets in the local markets.

I just don't see a reason to them wait for 3G WCDMA models. They are going forward with 2G EDGE phones in the US and Europe. They can certainly go forward with 3G CDMA2000 phones in Korea and Japan. They will not be inhibited by battery problems with 3G CDMA2000 like the 3G WCDMA either.
