Has any one else done a side-by-side comparison of iPhone versus other phone browser?

I've used a Q (Windows Mobile Smartphone) and a Treo (Palm OS) pretty extensively, and played with the iPhone tons, and I pretty much agree with most of the points in that review. Safari is the best mobile browser, if you want to have a reasonable facsimile of the PC web surfing experience. More on that below.

Talk about joke, check out the capabilities of a Windows Mobile browser. People complain about trouble loading 3-4 tabs, and what appears to be a bug, which I fully expect will be fixed in a near future update. See if anyone can load even ONE page on the Windows version...

True, the inability of Pocket IE to load multiple windows is a real detriment. So is the lack of support for javascript and AJAX. Of the available third party browsers, I know that Opera can have multiple windows (similar to tabs). Very nice alternative, actually.

What I do like about Palm's Blazer, WinMob's IE, and Opera Mobile is that it doesn't try to duplicate the desktop browsing experience-- it tries to work within the limitations of a handheld's screen. Take SI for instance. Below is what the message board looks like on my Q. The page is formatted to fit within the width of the screen, with the text wrapping around when necessary (320 px). It's perfectly readable and requires only paging up and down (easy and comfortable to do with a one hand). In contrast, the iphone will load the whole SI message board page, but with the text too small to read. You can zoom in, but the text does not reflow into the newly sized browser window, so when you zoom to the point that the text is readable, you have to scroll side to side with every line of text, and scroll up and down to get the next block of text. IMO, that's not the best way to catch up on SI reading while eating a bowl of cereal for breakfast.

i agree Windows Mobile is absolute garbage. if that is the comparison, iPhone/Touch is fantastic. great for Apple doing so well in comparison to a product (Windows Mobile) that does not even deserve to exist.

but all i really care about is whether the iPhone/Touch can replace my Macbook when i'm away from home for surfing/viewing web pages and PDFs. on that basis, iPhone/Touch is sorely lacking.

maybe it's not important to many users, but to me, the main use of a web-enabled computing device is to quickly and easily read and access multiple documents. on this count, iPhone/Touch is still not ready for prime time in my book.
