Alberta Premier Questions Royalty Hike Proposal After Oilsands Firms Threaten To Leave Province []
rttnews.com
10/12/2007 11:19:26 AM Canada's National Post reported on Friday that Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach may reconsider a proposal to increase royalties and taxes paid by oil sands operators. An Alberta government report released in mid-September urged a boost in royalties by 20 percent or about C$2 billion a year.

Oil sands operators have warned that that Alberta's proposed energy royalty hike will force companies to cut thousands of jobs in the province. Alberta stands to lose billions if the hike is approved, as Canadian Natural Resources (CNQ.TO), Talisman Energy (TLM.TO) and EnCana (ECA.TO) have threatened to shift investment elsewhere.

On Thursday, Builders Energy Services Trust (BET.UN.TO) announced that it will be cutting its October distribution by 50 percent, citing dreary prospects for the oilfield services industry should the hikes take effect.

It looks like the Premier may not increase the full royalty tax as earlier proposed.
