Very interesting Sun. I have always thought of iran as a nation whose focus was in the direction of europe and the stans and russia. I think the twin events of the iranian overthrow of the shah and adoption of an islamic state and the subsequent iran/iraq war turned them toward the middle east.
Like the old USSR they have ideological and national interests to contend with. After the iraq war, one can see what they are now doing in iraq, lebanon and syria as defensive in the sense of creation of buffer states but in ideological terms its a dagger aimed at the heart of sunni arab states. Much like USSR in EE after WW2.
But if iran didnt have a radical islamic state, their interests would be away from the chaos of the arab world, no??? They would be more intersted in south asia, the stans, russia and the rest of europe. Better relations with the US would be a good thing for both nations too.
Just as you would say bushism is making it impossible for the two nations to dialogue I would say same with ayotollas and their moves in the mideast and with nukes.
I have asked this of you before and you seem not to want to get into it.
