I was thinking about this today as well, following Goldman's report. If Goldman were to pull an Enron with it's SPE's, would any auditor have the balls to call them on it? I think not, not unless they had a death wish...they could (and have?) paper it over indefinitely, with no repercussions to them.

And if they ever did get caught, a bail out would be automatic anyway......

When I first got into stocks, I asked a co-worker if I should sign up with the local Merill or Smith Barney and let them manage my $$$. My co-worker said " the goal of a broker is to make YOUR money HIS money." I'm amazed at how little a stink those high net worth folks who give their money to hedge funds have made.
