students can’t stake out turf like gangs.

Evanston is a very diverse community which takes great pride in that. I've heard it called 'the Berkley of the Midwest' although that's probably more a conceit of the Birkenstock crowd than anything else. Anyway, last year at Jons school they moved the recess schedule around so that third and fifth grade took recess at the same time. There are three different playgounds-for k thru 5-so there is an awareness that different ages don't play well with each other. This did not stop a couple of fifth graders from threatening both Jon and his friend Kallial with an "ass whoopin" if they continued to play together. It happened to be black kids, but that's not the point. The kids went to their teacher and the schedule was changed back so that fifth and third no longer had contact. I don't know if other steps were taken. A note home to the parents? That's where these kids got that attitude. Another assembly with songs about all the colors of the rainbow? Believe me, the school system spends more time on that subject, both directly and indirectly, than they do on math or reading. This, by the way, had nothing to do with Jon not going to this school this year. This was a relatively minor and peripheral issue.

Anyway....
