the Iranians do not suffer from the same failings and are thus much tougher enemies, especially as this regime has no value for human life,

I will have to disagree with you on this point as I don't think their 'toughness,' which I consider to be mostly empty bravado, is ultimately relevant.

The Iranians have not since facing Saddam faced an enemy like us. Set point battles involving trench warfare, artillery, and the kind of tactics which were in place during the Iran/Iraq war would never be the tactics used by the US. We are far too developed to deal with this kind of antiquated battle.

Remember that the Iranians have not been tested in a 21st Century battlefied. I don't think they would last any longer than Saddam did. They would not see us coming before the bulk of their military assets would be destroyed.

Oh, sure, they would let Hizbollah loose, there would be oil disruption, global terrorism, political upheaval everywhere, but at the end of the day, the Iranians could not possibly win. They would be ultimately pacified. At a substantial cost, no doubt, but ultimately rendered impotent. And it would not take boots on the ground to do it since the object would not be to take over Iran but to simply force them to give up their nuclear pretensions.

Given smart bombs and other technology, the civilian population losses would be minimal.

Iran would not be able to sell oil to anyone. Its economy would collapse in no time flat because, as you know, it's in shambles, utterly dependent on oil exports.

It can be done and it probably must be done before these nuts end up with a nuke.
