In our neighborhood, with the way sound travels, we'd have 8 or 9 witnesses that would hear the warning; get out of my home or I will shoot you. Saying it loud enough of course, then if the shot is heard a reasonable time afterwards like 2-4 seconds to allow them time to leave such a little house, there shouldn't be a problem of self defense.

We hear the neighbors from 2 houses away if they want you to hear them. An episode when we first moved in, a neighbor 2 houses down and across the street was calling out CALL 911! crashing glass over and over. We did, and they already had several calls on it. Yelling out works very well. That should be in there with the first line defense. It has worked for me in parking lots to keep panhandling creeps at a distance. people look, they usually back off.

edit.. I usually start that conversation with "I can hear you from where you are. What do you want? When he moves closer, I repeat it louder. I had a big moose of a guy finally back off after he got within strike distance because I was then demanding him to back away from me in a loud voice. Better not to fight if you don't have to. I have more to lose than the bum if assault comes into play. Law suits are big here.
