"The reason pot is illegal is because it's a gateway drug. "

If that were true, cigarettes would get you the death penalty.

The majority of people that experiment with pot never use anything stronger. For those people, pot has been a "terminus" drug. In other words the last drug they use.

Let me be a little more direct.

your statement:
"The reason pot is illegal is because it's a gateway drug."

There are two errors here.
First that is not the reason.
Second the part about "gateway drug" is false.

Pot continues to be against the law because of the lies being fed to us by our government. You just listed one of them.

Evil people require blindness by law.

The devil enjoys needless human suffering.

"because it's a gateway drug."

Far less so then either tobacco or alcohol --- according to government statistics.

(Also... that claim was never even advanced until MANY, MANY decades after the plant was FIRST criminalized. So that most EMPHATICALLY is *not* the 'reason it was made illegal'. :-)

The reasons it was first prohibited had far more to do with preserving the profits of big tobacco and alcohol interests, official racism in politics (thought at the time to be a good way to keep blacks and browns locked up and or out of politics), and the schemes of certain politico/cops to advance their careers by carving out nice cozy government jobs for themselves by lying to Congress about the great, impending 'threat'. (Harry S. Anslinger, and later J. Edgar Hoover... and now whomever the Hell the latest 'Drug Czar' is....), not to mention the efforts of certain Yellow Journalism Media Barons (the Hearsts, anyone?) who were seeking to increase their profits....

As a side comment... I would probably judge that the 'Drug War' has been the SINGLE greatest factor in *increasing the power* of central government, and reducing the traditional liberties enjoyed by American citizens, of the entire past century.

I'd judge that the 'Cold War' ranked second, and the 'War on Terrorism' ranked a distant third thus far in that regard.

The DEA continues it's campaign against the seriously ill people of California:

from ASA..

Hello Everyone,

ASA Has has received 5 confirmed reports of Asset Forfeiture letters sent from the DEA to Santa Barbara County dispensaries. The DEA, once more, has chosen to victimize an innocent third party, property owners, in its ongoing war on medical cannabis. The DEA used similar intimidation tactics in Los Angeles in July, which has had mixed results. The DEA has not successfully seized a landlord's property for having rented to a dispensing collective, but as we witnessed in Los Angeles, this is still a serious threat and a real attack on safe access.

Lawyers agree that landlords cannot fight the asset forfeiture cases in court, as the US Attorney has the authority and jurisdiction to move forward. A legislative solution will take too long to be useful for the collectives and cooperatives targeted already, or for those will are likely to be targeted soon. We need a political fix for this problem in the immediate future. The DEA is continuing to go to drastic measures like these to undermine California state law. This is yet another reason Governor Schwarzenegger needs to stand up for patients' rights and defend California's medical marijuana laws. We must put an end to the mindless victimization of innocent citizens.

We are working with Santa Barbara ASA chapter and the Santa Barbara dispensaries to ensure the safety of the landlords, patients, and providers. ASA will keep you updated on the situation.
