Very much the same went on in the 20s in competition for persian and arabian oil and controll of the pipe line that would carry it.

The stakes were for britian were vital in that, at that time, it was switching to oil from coal to fuel its navy.
in fact the Admiralty was very active in persuading reluctant members of commons that survival of the empire depended on it.

Without access and controll of the oil its navy might as well stay in port.

It would be nice to split up the russians from the chinese from the iranians...or nock a player out of the game.
