Oh, so that explains my problem. Increasingly I have pondered hyphens, putting them in and taking them out, not quite at random, but certainly it has become an issue for me. Now I bung them in anywhere they seem to fit better than separating the words or joining them into one word.

English really needs a total revamp into a logical thing. It's like pounds, shillings, pence, and the imperial system of weights and measures. It's a topsy turvy, or topsyturvy, cacophony of a random pastiche of neologisms handed down to us with no rhyme or reason.

It's time to systematize or systematise it. System Internationale did a good job on metrication of weights and measures. Even the alphabet is passe.

It's a bunch of circles, with little straight lines added on here and there, gaps made here and there, then v w x y z at the end with diagonal lines, with some up and down ijklt a few h m n r s oddballs, odd balls, or odd-balls, here and there.

a b c d e g o p q belong together, with a circle and an up and down [though in typing, 'a' is turned into some weird shape].

v w x y z and maybe k belong together

f i j l t go together

h m n r u go together

s is a weirdo on its own. Should be at the end of the alphabet.

g p q y and j need tidying up. They have those dopey bits hanging down through the bottom. They need redesigning ABOVE the line.

Then there is phonetic spelling to be done. Elimination of multi-meaning words such as row roe, sew sow sough, bow bough

etc.... what a mess...
