If a government supplies basic services that you can trust, then it frees the individual from having to deal with it. The difference between a third world country and a first world country is that in the third world most of the population is spending all of it's time supplying it's own basic services and can't do the more specialized activities that advance the society.

Private business can't really substitute that role, since they will always be under pressure to squeeze a bit more profit out of the arrangement until finally the individual can no long concentrate on what they do best, and instead have to look out that they aren't being squeezed too much. Once again individuals begin spending their intellect and energy in areas that are best left to a bureaucracy.

We all win, even if we don't make much use of the central supplied service.
