I have ripped a few movies for the iPod, but I don't have Apple TV yet.

I have found that ripping TV shows on DVD is the most useful. Two seasons of 3rd Rock, two seasons of King of Queens and one season of Married With Children provides quite a bit of variety for the grandsons when traveling.

What I would like to be able to do is build a home library of popular TV shows and movies on the hard drive for easy access to view on a home television [in high definition]. Bet we don't see that for awhile.

However, with the DVR hooked to the TV, I really don't use the DVDs for entertainment much at all. And, I never use the computer to watch ripped TV shows or movies. There is just too much feed coming from the DVR. I set it to capture and hold 2 episodes of each of my selections, thereby allowing a rich variety in the can at any given time. After watching one, I delete it. It only captures programming that I'm really, really interested in, and I never have enough time to watch it all. And, that is with the ability to FF through commercials, dropping 1 hour shows down to ~45 minutes.

I didn't know that they had bumped the Apple TV's storage up to 160GB. Thanks. That may be the stroke that makes me buy one.

I have cable. I like it in general. There are about 10 channels I like out of 70 or so. I would not pay $1 for any programs. That would add up too fast. I watch when I'm doing grunt work on my computer. I watch a lot of news particularly at odd hours like Bloomberg at 5AM.

Sometimes I think I may abandon cable all together as I think it is detrimental to my ability to work and grow. I'd be better off without it. At $50/mnth I'm paying $600/yr with no write off.

When I look at the costs of movie and TV program downloads it looks too high for me although that might be a good thing. I'd be more selective about what I watch. On the other hand I watch a lot of educational programs so they are not a big waste.

I think I'm like a lot of people. I'd like to cut my watching down and costs down. It's just barely a wash.

So far no one has solved this for me. Tivo no. Cable no. There are no solutions I like.

What I'd really like is to be able to subscribe to ONLY the channels I regularly watch. That would be ideal.

I wish Apple had it's own pay for each channel network. I'd buy a box for that.

it's not a bad device as long as your expectations are not too high
Amen.

i can't imagine ripping DVDs.
I, OTOH, intend to rip all my DVDs so that I can have my movies on demand. Now I can watch more than one movie at a time since Apple TV remembers where I paused at each movie. It's also great for taking to the vacation home -- just plug it into the LCD when you get there, and voila! you have all your favorite movies and concerts. Perfect for the weekend getaway :)
