My husband has always refused to take any medication at all, even aspirin for headaches. The one exception he makes is taking Nyquil when he has a cold so he can sleep.

The dr. prescribed something for the gout, but it upset his stomach and he decided he'd rather live with the pain than feel as if his system was out of whack. What has worked for him this past year is taking Alleve as soon as he notices any warning signs. This seems to have shortened the episodes and made them bearable. Have no idea if this makes physiological sense-- I suppose Alleve is anti-inflammatory?- but it seems to be working for him.
