do you do the first rip as "Turbo Rip"?

Yes.

but my impression is it took a long time (like 30 minutes)

Like I said, it takes awhile. And it will take longer if you do a two-pass rip. One way to speed things up a little is to copy the contents of the DVD to disk and then rip from there. I must say I haven't timed things, so I don't know how much time savings to expect. You could also copy several DVDs to disk and probably gang them up to rip while you're asleep. There is a queue option in Handbrake that might allow you to do this, but the last time I tried it just put everything into one huge file, which is not what I wanted. I've left it alone for now as I've been too busy to investigate further. The alternative is to write a script to automate this process.
