The point I was trying to make is you are attempting to get the shoe to fit when it's clearly the wrong size -- so you trim here and trim there etc.

Although there may be similarities between the present situation and Suez, there are also many differences, the most notable being the total commitment and involvement of the US in the region and also its 100% support for Israel. At the time of Suez, the US was very much an unknown quantity, in fact, it was the US that called a halt to the fiasco.
