Sales happen far more often than every 6 months.
Nearly every meat item is on sale once every month (two at most).
You also have to know how to wrap it. I wrap it in plastic wrap and then again in freezer paper.

This is what my parents did. Mom would shop. Dad would wrap stuff in freezer paper, and date and label the package. We had a freezer on the back porch. Properly wrapped, food will last longer than 6 months.

The flavor of meat comes solely from its associated fats. That's why marbled ribeye tastes better than a dry round.
Fats oxidize when exposed to air even when frozen, so unless it's vacuum packed or stored at liquid nitrogen temperature (like bull semen) meat has a rather short shelf life.
