There used to be a large (huge) steel industry here in Chicago (Southworks), and both the union and management killed it dead, completely gone, all the buildings razed. Both groups got theirs and screw everybody else. Anytime part of the union contract includes guaranteed employment, seniority, or tenure as part of the contract there is a problem. Even a 'good' union imposes another layer of unproductive people plus the usual slackers who spend more energy abusing the system than it would take to do the job. Once job productivity is eliminated as a factor in employment the jig is up.
