I know why he underperformed the market in 1988 to 1990, since he was not fully invested during a period of generally rising prices, but what is the source of the underperformance in 1986 - 1987? I would have expected him to have performed roughly in line with the market during that period, since he was fully invested.

Or is this another case of Hulbert comparing portfolios that include bond funds to an equity index?
