Imagine being a senior, on your own with US healthcare prior to medicare. That has to be a scary thought.

Before Medicare, people paid doctors out-of-pocket, costs were lower. The entrance of government insurance into the system has had a dramatic effect on healthcare costs.

I'm not trying to be argumentative or take sides here, or saying that Medicare has helped or hurt, but the healthcare delivery and payment system was nothing then like it has become post-Medicare. There are also many other intervening factors that affect the entire system as well.
