You need to get out to somewhere other than a retirement "community". That is not the typical retiree.

The majority of retirees have returned to work, unable to ever retire again most likely. As for "But virtually ALL current retirees are taking out much much more than they put into SS" ...got facts? Taking into account inflation adjusted $$$ I would find that very hard to believe.

Cutting benefits or raising the payroll tax will only allow the right to divert more funds to the DoD contractors and the left to divert more funds to welfare cases. They have to wall off the Social Security program from the rest of the government. The first step toward fiscal sanity is to replace the nonmarketable securities in the trust fund with publicly redeemable treasury notes so that the politicians are forced to bring the budget under control by 2020-2025 when the trust fund starts to cash them in.
