I'm actually undecided on the 'forced markdown' issue -- on the one hand it doesn't seem to make much sense for the US to volunteer to have a depression, but on the other hand I don't like the idea that there are insolvent financials wandering around out there that I may accidentally step on in the future like some kind of land mine.

Yet again, perhaps it's only hubris that makes CBs think they have a choice in these asset valuation matters -- markets usually have a way of sniffing out true values and making corrections against people's wills, although admittedly the Japanese post-bubble banking sector somewhat belies that axiom
