PA, yes. Monmouth County, NJ, no. If you bought in 1990, the bottom of the real estate bubble, you could probably find a nice small colonial or large cape in Keyport for under $200,000, because it's not an upper class town, like Rumson or Holmdel. But large anything? Not unless it needed a LOT of work.

ps. here is a cool map showing the median listing price for houses by towns in Monmouth County. Keyport is currently $341,000, and Red Bank, where I used to live, is $559,000. Yowsa!

Unless they live in Bergen County or something, they bought a huge house.

Ok, I'll buy that, but I guess that wasn't a very bright thing to do. Living beyond ones means never is. I object to the 'I need, want, deserve this that and the other and can't pay my bills as a result. If the government would just pay some bills for me, it'd be all right. I'm a nice person, please feel sorry for me.'

I'm sure you understand. What I really object to is not these people, they're just working stiffs doing the best they can with what they've got. It's the journalists who write the story which does nothing except foster a feeling of entitlement and discontent among their readers. It's just another example of pandering.

A good earful of Suzy Orman might help these people. The self pity never will. Articles like this serve to legitimize self pity.

Those people in Keyport may have gotten a better deal than I thought. That link on current housing prices also shows some history:

Jun-Aug '07 Mar-May '07 Jun-Aug '0 Jun-Aug '02
$265,989 $324,415 $310,601 $164,814

They don't include the price based on number of bedrooms, unfortunately. Still, based on this data, it looks like they could have gotten something decent for around $140,000 - $150,000 in the 1990's.

Homes are very reasonable in N. Texas, but most new construction is over 3,000 sq. ft.
