Screen capture has been built into the Mac OS since it was a toddler in a BW 9" screen. Still there in OSX. To do a screen shot simply

Press Shift-Apple-3

You get a copy of the full screen in a .png file on the desktop.

If you prefer another file format, double click on the result (it will open in Preview) and do a Save as.. and select your favorite format like jpg or tiff or...

Then for finer control, there is the Grab application in
Applications : Utilities
you can select specific areas of the screen to capture

I've been known to using Grab to do screen grabs of google maps and patch them together in Photoshop before I go on a trip... :-)

[I think Grab first appeared in OSX. Very similar to the equivalent utility in Linux]
