Peasant isn't a pejorative, it's a description of a way of life.

Peasants are farm workers, but don't own the farm they work on.

They work for someone who exploits their labor, doesn't properly compensate them, doesn't respect them, doesn't consider their freedom and individuality important, in this case, the PRC nabobs.

My clients love me. They hug me and give me flowers. Seriously.
