The description of baiting those who collected said "freebie" terrorist equipment did seem odd or perhaps absurd. But it might be just the description of what they did rather than reality.

If somebody finds a hand grenade, obviously not ready to blow up, it would be tempting to pick it up and take it home.

I can imagine I'd think it might be useful in case of needing to defend myself and not so much useful in attacking Americans. To be shot from 1 km away by a super-sniper seems a bit odd.

But news media descriptions of what really happens are usually so far from the truth that they are unrecognizable [in my own direct experience]. So I would take that one with a grain of salt.
