I was about to say something about going to extremes and the necessity for moderation in everything (Zzzzz), but then realized this was the 50's, the guy probably lived through the depression - a lot of people that went through that tend to be like that. That market crash lasted a loooooong time.

in the late 50's gas was 27.9c/gal. That was full service at an Esso or Socony Mobil or Texaco station. Or Union 76 or Standard. Earlier it might have been 19.9c. In either case to save 10 cents was not the same as today. <g>
