Big yellow nasty stuff - saw it once - I think it was five lbs. - some grade school friend had a lump in his refrigerator - good only for wonderbread cheese sandwiches.

Talk about ancient history...

As part of the farm subsidies, they would buy up milk to keep the price high. Since milk spoils pretty quickly, they'd make it into American cheese, which does store rather well. Well, the subsidies were running ahead of their ability to dispose of the cheese as foreign aid. So, during the Reagan administration, they started to hand it out to the poor. But, then the cheese manufacturers started to complain that it was cutting into their sales, so the distribution was stopped.

I guess they throw it away now.
