i think we have different definitions for the verb "to pioneer". you're also ignoring the work metcalf did after xerox. i don't think you know much about ethernet history. the best thing i can say about intel wrt ethernet is that they helped commercialize it. they had to buy level one to get some phy ip.

In the same way WiFi was not developed by Intel, but Intel made it pervasive by setting standards.

why don't you go check out who voted for various 802.11 standards and clarify this statement?

intel used to buy their wifi phys the same way they bought ethernet phys for a very long time. initial centrino didn't even have intel phy ip in it. please get informed before you post these inaccurate statements.

again the best one can say about intel and wifi is that they helped commercialize it by including it in their centrino platform ie. shoved it down our throats but we were lucky that time as consumers. intel also tried to bundle rdram support in their chipsets so not all bundling by a monopolist is good, actually it's most of the time bad but sometimes we get lucky as consumers.
