Nadine you have a dislike of academics that seems all too personal...did they give you a hard time at university? Not at all - I learned my view of academia from a professor father who had a far more realistic view of the limits of academic power than did most of his colleagues. The illusion that political figures ought to listen to professors and would be bowled over by the cleverness of their arguments if they did, is widespread and of long standing.
