The D.C.-based private equity firm has agreed to invest in Scopel, a Brazilian real estate developer.

Carlyle, which has more than $75 billion under management, did not disclose the financial terms of the investment, which it described in a statement as "significant."

The Latin America real estate team at Carlyle, established in September 2006, will make the investment in Scopel.

The development company, formed 41 years ago, focuses on Sao Paulo but wants to expand into other regions of Brazil. Scopel concentrates on low and middle-income housing as well as first-time homebuyers.

Since its inception, the company has started 120 developments. Carlyle's investment will help Scopel take on more long-term projects, according to Eduardo Machado, a managing director and head of Carlyle's Latin America real estate team.

Earlier this year, the Carlyle/Riverstone renewable energy infrastructure fund made a "significant equity investment" in CNAA, which is building four ethanol plants with Santa Elisa Vale.
