Intel was the first to make chips for the Ethernet in the early 80's.These chips were sold to Digital,3Com, and others for implementing Ethernet solutions. A fer years later AMD came up with its own Ethernet chips.

Intel started selling Ethernet cards under its own label a lot later, and that is responsible for the you impression.
