The growth in "new households" - first-time buyers or first-time renters - has plunged 70 percent from last year's rate.

The NAR notes that household formation is slowing to below expectations, to about 415,000 on an annual basis, suggesting a large number of people are roommating, living with parents and otherwise doubling up. That's two-thirds below the rate of household formation in 2006.
