Business conditions in New York City fell to their lowest level in 27-months in September, according to a survey of purchasing managers released Friday.

The business conditions index declined to 35.1 in September, according to the National Association of Purchasing Managers- New York report on non-manufacturing activity. That figure is a marked decrease from 47.3 in August.

Numbers below 50 indicate contraction while numbers above 50 represent economic growth.

Business activity, as measured by NAPM, has swung cyclically since February. It rose 17 points in June only to drop 13 in July, followed by an eight-point rise in August.

The business conditions index is considered a good indicator of future job trends in New York City. The city’s seasonably adjusted unemployment remained flat at 5.8% in August.

The NAPM outlook index, which measures business attitudes over the next six months, jumped 15 points to 75 in September, after dipping two points in August.
