Even with the employee paying a higher percentage in some cases, both mean and median total compensation are up.

I can't eat a check my employer gives to the insurance company or the company gives to the doctor or hospital, just as I can't eat other benefits I receive or could receive. But that doesn't make them something other than compensation.

Now if you want to argue that the compensation has become less flexible in some case I'd agree. A large reason for that is that the government gives preferential tax treatment to insurance compensation and some other benefits.
