I had a winter home in Scottsdale from 1986-99. My wife and I used to frequent an Italian restaurant (can't remember the name) in a strip shopping center on the NW corner of Scottsdale Road and Thunderbird. Joe and his wife ate there often and we had several interesting conversations. He always packed a gun and had a booming voice with an ego to match. I remember when he bought video tapes of a lecture series by Newt Gingrich and made the inmates watch it repeatedly. When he found out that many women were writing the inmates requesting their pink underwear, he opened a retail shop (I think it was in Fashion Square) selling the pink undies to the public, with the proceeds going to the families of deputies killed or wounded in the line of duty. What a colorful, decisive guy. I wish we could clone him.
