If people like Krugman were being purely partisan, the polling of the American public would show different numbers in categories like: "are you better off this year than last", or "do you think the economy is going in the right direction".

Nonsense. Krugman's level of partisanship doesn't have a strong connection to such responses to the polls, and to the extent it has any connection, his partisan rants against the administration would increase the negative responses about it.
