VIASPACE CEO Presents at Batteries 2007 Congress

PASADENA, Calif., Oct 02, 2007 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- VIASPACE Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: VSPC), a company commercializing fuel cell technologies from NASA announced that CEO Dr. Carl Kukkonen made an invited presentation on micro fuel cells for portable electronics at the BATTERIES 2007 Congress in France on September 28, 2007. Batteries 2007 is an annual European conference that focuses on rechargeable battery technology, markets, products and regulations. Batteries 2007 had 60 speakers representing battery manufacturers, material suppliers, electronic device suppliers, and environmental and recycling specialists. A session was devoted to hybrid and electric vehicles which represent a large potential battery market, and another session was dedicated to micro fuel cells and ultracapacitors which represent alternatives to rechargeable batteries. 400 people attended the Congress.
VIASPACE subsidiary Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Corporation produces disposable methanol fuel cartridges that provide the liquid energy source for fuel cells that produce electricity for portable electronic devices such as notebook computers and mobile phones. These disposable cartridges represent a recurring revenue stream similar to printer cartridges or razor blades. The cartridges are made of recyclable materials, but international regulations state that they should not be refillable by the consumer for safety reasons. Several international companies such as Toshiba and Samsung have demonstrated notebook computers, cell phones and other devices powered by direct methanol fuel cells. A notebook computer running on methanol could have 10 hours of uninterrupted operation, and instantaneous recharging by simply replacing the empty cartridge with a new one.
