"In countries where Islam is practiced, they're called honor killings, but dowry deaths and so-called crimes of passion have a similar dynamic in that the women are killed by male family members and the crimes are perceived as excusable or understandable," said Widney Brown, advocacy director for Human Rights Watch.

Nope, you just redefined the subject again. The subject was the honor killing of a female because she marries without approval. "Dowry deaths" usually refer to disputes in which a woman is killed in a dispute over money - her family hasn't paid up, or more is demanded. It's the same thing only that a woman is killed by a close relative, but the motive is different (money instead of shame) and the killers are different (husband instead of brothers or father).

re honor killing....The practice, she said, "goes across cultures and across religions."

Nonsense. Where do Jews or Christians kill their daughters for marrying outside the faith?
