Nothing gets the social conservative rank-and-file up in arms (thus: active and contributing to candidates, volunteering time, etc.) as the Hil-de-beast does. Whereas, among the Dem ranks (outside of Hil's fairly large lead among Dem women... which is nearly matched by her polling shortfall among Dem men) the enthusiasm for her is much more muted. (And the main reason for her current lead in the polls among Dems seems to be the --- well stoked and managed --- impression that she is 'the best choice to win in the general election'. You'll notice that is the exact same lackluster argument that was advanced for the candidacy of the 'inevitable winner Kerry'. :-) Whereas, among the ranks of the LARGEST political grouping in America, the Independents, her high negatives in the polling indicate exactly the opposite --- that (although it is possible for any Dem to win if the G.O.P. does a pratfall...) Hil actually shapes up as a weaker candidate for the Dems in the general election - since her support numbers have a cap on them in the polls, and are nearly exactly matched by the numbers of those who oppose her consistently. (And the general public, regardless of how it's sliced up into partisan groupings, is not exactly all that thrilled at the prospect of going Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton in the Presidency. :-) No, for many social conservatives in the G.O.P. ranks though, Hil makes for an appealing candidate to run against. (Which is why so many of them seem to want her as their opposition candidate.) One that gives them as good as '50/50' odds of winning against in the general election of '08 while --- (if losing against her in '08) --- a Dem who is practically GUARANTEED to ignite opposition during her four or eight years... revitalize the falling fortunes of the social conservative movement... result in floods of money going to their causes, etc., etc. (The social/religious conservative movement is not nearly as likely to become revitalized under a Rudy Presidency....)
