Mindmeld, how about the Ford Escape hybrid?

Seems like a great way to reduce fuel consumption without having to dump the concept of SUVs.

mindmeld,

Tell me about it. I'm just crossing my fingers for Tesla, GM (VOLT), and Toyota (Prius). If they can make plug-in electric cars work for the masses, then we'll be on our way, no matter what the politicians do.

The problem, in the past, has been that even if you cost of acquiring electric car was not an issue, powering it by plugging it into the outlet was more expensive than going to the gas station. I don't know where exactly it stands now, but since incremental power capacity is coming from natural gas (and some oil), higher price of natural gas influences the price of electricity, therefore no headway will be achieved until the link of cost of electricity is decoupled from price of oil and natural gas (with cost of electricity staying where it is or going down, while price of natural gas and oil go up). That can only happen when majority of power is generated by nuclear or solar energy.

So your dream of a plug in car will only happen after the pre-requisite of cheap power from nuclear or solar is met (to make it cheaper than gas). Only then will the consumers jump on those choices.

Unfortunately, the environmentalists (and other alarmists)have caused 25 to 30 year setback to the goal of cheap energy by killing nuclear power plan construction.
