Wal-Mart Cuts Toy Prices In Early Start to Holiday Push

By KEVIN KINGSBURY

October 1, 2007 5:24 p.m.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. threw down the gauntlet 12 weeks before Christmas by cutting prices 10% to 50% on its "Top 12 Toys of Christmas," and signaled more reductions are coming.

The move marks an ever-earlier start to the holiday price wars. Last year, Wal-Mart announced reductions on more than 100 toys and games in mid-October. That disclosure was about two weeks earlier than 2005 and came with deeper price cuts.

The cuts will likely put pressure on rivals including Toys "R" Us Inc. and Target Corp., whose share of the U.S. toy market are about 13% each. Wal-Mart has double that amount, and its pricing strategies have driven less-efficient competitors out of business in recent years.

The earlier reductions may also signal concern about consumer spending. Continued high gasoline prices have been coupled by the summer's credit crunch and a lag in job creation in raising worries on the health of the U.S. consumer.

Chief Toy Officer Laura Phillips noted Wal-Mart is starting "early and aggressively" with its holiday pricing. More price cuts, or rollbacks in the company's parlance, will be announced every week "in this aggressive move to lead the market on holiday savings."

The toys in the first round of cuts include Tonka Trucks, a Fisher Price digital camera for kids ages 3 and up and a game based on the television show "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader."

My wife was speaking to a landscaper in Fla yesterday. She asked him what his biggest concern is. He replied, "Having enough business. Things are real bad." My wife's colleague looked at her and asked, "What's going on in Fla.?" Our economy is strong in the heart of Silly Valley, and many are oblivious to what's going on elsewhere.

On the flipside, my friend said that houses aren't moving as fast as they were in Burlingame, but that could be seasonal. Still moving very fast in my neck of the woods, the epicenter of Silly Valley.
