We DID fight a "generational" COLD war with the commies, with several large border skirmish wars. We "won", sort of. I guess the commies didn't really NEED wiping out once the Soviets collapsed. They just didn't seem that scary anymore. Maybe our leaders decided we wouldn't believe the demonizing anymore? The terrorists, with no country and no army, no missiles, no submarines, etc. seem like a pretty damn poor substitute for control through fear mongering. Yet, somehow we are still conned into spending huge amounts on "defense". Americans are really dumb.
