Ethanol from sugar cane is better. Ethanol from cellulose has great potential if the problems are ever solved.

The problem I see with that is more demand for land for intensive agriculture. Where can it come from? Cutting down rain forests? That is surely a loser from CO2 perspective.

The only valid sources, IMO, are processing (I mean burning) what otherwise would have been waste, or reforestation and using wood. Not necessarily for electricity generation, but for heat.

IMO, hoping that a major source of power (for electricity generation) can come from things other than nuclear and solar will turn into disappointment.

The reason, is that we want cheap power. Not something that is barely competitive with coal, but cheaper. That can be achieved with nuclear, and eventually with solar, and when power does become cheaper as a result, the high operating cost alternative, such as ethanol will be even more of an albatross that it is now...
