Americans torturing Iraqis in Abu Ghurayb is junior personnel misconduct to most here and proof of American's savage nature and lack of civilization and culture elsewhere.

Iraqis head hacking and car bombing is gruesome terrorist acts here and proof of Islam as a violent religion etc. And it is fighting for freedom and one's way of life elsewhere.

Don't you see the difference in your example? Americans are ashamed of the perpetrators of Abu Graib. We believe Abu Graib was wrong, and are ashamed that our team did it. Aren't the ME folks ashamed of the car bombers and head hackers?

Thats why FP decision making is so hard for every nation. FP realists act only in narrow national interest and will rule out minor things like fellow democracy, former ally, new ally is a butcher and so on. So imho, realism alone does not work. Nor does ideology which led us into iraq nor does control of natural resources of others which also led us into iraq. So how does one create a balance fp that allows us to talk to the worst scum on the planet in order to avoid war, while not selling out allies.. all easier said than done.
My view about iran is that it doesnt really threaten us or even israel. I think its a threat to sunni arab states and a nuclear armed iran will lead them to go nuke too and what do you think will happen if both are armed with nukes? Well there is a good chance they will be used in the region and probably accidentally as we always feared would occur during the cold war. One country would misread anothers intentions and poof. That would be an unmitigated human disaster and would destroy oil reserves for a long time causing world wide economic catastrophe. Hell we can argue about meaning of weak dollar and hig gold price, but there is no doubt the world is on dubious footing as we speak so just imagine a nuked mideast and much less oil in the equation...Thats why stopping iran's move toward weaponizing is so important.
